Since October 2024, Ambassador Vázquez Bermúdez is the Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations Office and other International Organization in Geneva. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Legal Adviser of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador from 2020.
Ambassador Vázquez Bermúdez joined the Ecuadorian Foreign Service in 1986 and has served in the Ecuadorian Embassy in Lima, at the Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris, at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in New York, and at the Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS).
He is a member and the current Chairperson of the United Nations International Law Commission. Since 2018, he is the Special Rapporteur for General Principles of Law. He has lectured at several South American universities and in Geneva, and has published on international law issues.
Ambassador Vázquez Bermúdez is Doctor of Law and Attorney at Law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and holds an LLM in International Law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He also studied International Law at Columbia University, and is a graduate of the Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy of Chile.
